Captain John C. Hackem holds a US Coast Guard Master’s License. An experienced mariner, Captain John began his professional sea-faring adventures in the United States Navy where he specialized in navigation and countermeasures in aircraft launched from three carriers: the USS Independence, USS Intrepid, and USS Forrestal.
Following his Navy service, he graduated from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He spent 30 years in the development and management of chemical processes and production environments, and then changed careers to work in telecommunications network management before becoming a boat Captain.
Growing up and living on the water all his life, Captain John decided to bring the pleasures of a lifetime of boating and fishing he has enjoyed with family and friends to guests living or visiting Newburyport, Massachusetts. He launched Newburyport Cruises with the goal of providing safe, fun, and personalized boating experiences for individuals, couples, families, and small groups to enjoy the scenic beauty and fishing bounty of the Merrimack River.
When Captain John is not boating on the Merrimack River, you may also find him driving a World War II amphibious vehicle on the Charles River in Boston for Boston Duck Tours.
